What is CAD? (Computer-aided Drafting)

CAD drafters are responsible for creating various types of designs and have the option to specialize in specific areas such as architecture, civil engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, or mechanical drafting. They have the ability to develop preliminary sketches and construct 2-D or 3-D models of buildings, maps containing infrastructure like highways, bridges, and dams, wiring and assembly diagrams, as well as layouts of machinery or mechanical devices. Collaboration with other professionals, including architects and engineers, is common practice for CAD drafters as they exchange model designs and explore different possibilities.


HISTORY OF CAD

The origins of computer-aided drafting can be traced back to the emergence of descriptive geometry as a discipline in the 16th-17th centuries. Subsequently, drafting machines played a pivotal role in enhancing drafting techniques. However, it was during the post-World War II era that engineering drawings truly came into existence. By the year 1950, numerous architects had already embraced the utilization of numerical control of machine gear and automated engineering drawing, marking a significant milestone in the field.

Patrick J. Hanratty is credited with the conception of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), earning him the title of "The Father of CAD/CAM." It is widely acknowledged that a significant majority, approximately 70%, of the current 3-D mechanical CAD/CAM systems can be traced back to Hanratty's original code.

Hanratty's academic journey led him to obtain a PhD from the University of California, Irvine. He commenced his professional career at General Electric, where he authored Pronto, an early commercial numerical control programming language, in 1957. Subsequently, in 1961, he joined General Motors Research Laboratories, where he played a pivotal role in the development of Design Automated by Computer (DAC).

The transition from 2D to 3D marks a significant milestone in the evolution of computer-aided drafting. Initially, layout engineers and architects relied on 2D techniques to create their technical drawings. However, in the early 1960s, the development of 3D wireframe characteristics introduced a new dimension to the field.

In 1981, the introduction of the first IBM PC revolutionized the landscape of computer-aided drafting by providing a platform for its widespread implementation. This breakthrough paved the way for further advancements in the field.


The following year, a group of programmers took the initiative to establish Autodesk, a company dedicated to developing innovative software solutions. In 1983, they introduced AutoCAD, the first groundbreaking computer-aided drafting program specifically designed for the IBM PC.

It changed in 1987 when Pro/Engineer CAD program came out. By the 1990s, computers were capable of analyzing as 3D CAD required it. In 1995, the first solid modeler for Windows SolidWorks was created. Then Solid Edge, Inventor and so on followed.


In 2000, Alibre marketed Alibre Design, the first 3D CAD program performing client-server 3D modeling online. Autodesk brought in AutoCAD 2000i, their first web-based software.

AutoCAD revolutionized the history of computer-aided drafting, bringing about significant changes. Notably, it offered a remarkable 80% of the functionality provided by other drafting programs, but at a mere 20% of their cost. This breakthrough made progressive design and drafting solutions more economically viable. Nevertheless, despite its advancements, the software predominantly remained focused on 2D capabilities.


REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION

Typically, CAD drafters possess an associate degree from a community college or technical school, although they may also obtain a certificate in the field. The American Design Drafting Association offers certification options for drafters, allowing them to specialize in their chosen area. Additionally, Autodesk, a company specializing in CAD software, provides certification in AutoCAD.
