For those interested in learning to draw or paint and seeking guidance on necessary materials, this compilation of essential art supplies for beginners includes ten items that every novice artist should possess. This will provide insights into each supply, offer tips on selecting the most suitable options for beginners, and suggest where to purchase them.

This article will cover the essential supplies beginner will need:

  1. Graphite Drawing Pencils

  2. Sketchbook

  3. Eraser

  4. Pencil Sharpener

  5. Ruler

  6. Paint Set

  7. Paint Brushes

  8. Paint Pads

  9. Plastic or Paper Palette

  10. Color Wheel

1. Graphite Drawing Pencils

Graphite pencils are versatile tools that cater to a wide range of artistic needs, from basic sketches to intricate masterpieces.

Pencils Types

Harder pencils make lighter lines (Pencil numbers with an "H")

Softer pencils make darker lines (Pencil numbers with a "B")

They are available for purchase either individually or in convenient sets. Sets are particularly beneficial for novice artists as they offer a variety of pencil grades suitable for both drawing and shading purposes. A typical six-pencil set typically includes a 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, and 6B, each corresponding to a specific level of graphite hardness.

2. Sketchbook

A sketchbook is a fundamental tool for individuals who are in the process of acquiring drawing skills. Regardless of whether you intend to enroll in a drawing course or pursue self-study, this particular item ought to be prioritized.

Type of Sketchbook

A good size for beginners is 9 inches by 12 inches (22.9 x 30.5 cm). Look for paper with a weight of 50 to 65 lb. (74 to 96 GSM).

Sketchbooks serve as a platform for sketching shapes, honing composition techniques, mastering shading, and refining various drawing proficiencies. Even if your main focus lies in painting, a sketchbook offers an ideal space to map out your painting ideas before transitioning to other mediums.

3. Eraser

An eraser is an essential tool for eliminating pencil marks. This unique art eraser is gentle on paper and does not leave any trace behind. It is versatile, as it can be shaped into different forms to erase both large and small areas.

4. Pencil Sharpener

A pencil sharpener is essential for maintaining sharp pencils for your artwork. Hand-held sharpeners made of metal are user-friendly and provide visibility of the pencil tip during the sharpening process, aiding in the prevention of over-sharpening and breakage.

What kind of pencil sharpener should I get for sketching?

An 8 mm single (standard pencil size) or double sharpener with 8 mm and 10.5 mm holes for thicker pencils

5. Ruler

A ruler is an essential instrument for creating horizon lines, streets, buildings, or any other elements requiring straight lines. Go for a 12″ or 18″ (30 or 45 cm) ruler crafted from stainless steel or anodized aluminum. These varieties of rulers are simple to maintain cleanliness. Certain artists prefer "cork-back" rulers as they remain steady on paper or canvas surfaces.

6. Paint Set

Watercolor and acrylic paints are excellent options for individuals who are new to painting. Since both are water-based, there is no need for paint thinners during the painting process or for cleanup. Beginners can acquire fundamental painting skills through classes, books, videos, or online tutorials. Get a transparent watercolor pan set containing eight to twelve colors, and consider purchasing a set of heavy body acrylics in tubes. Heavy body paint allows brush strokes to show, but can be diluted with water for a more polished finish. When buying a beginner's set, make sure it includes at least six essential colors: red, yellow, green, blue, black, and white. It's advisable to have two tubes of white paint on hand for color mixing purposes.

If you're buying tubes of paint individually, here's a selection of colors to start with:

Red

Yellow

Green

Blue

Purple

Brown

Black

White

7. Paint Brushes

When you acquire paints, you will require brushes. When you go to an art supply shop, you will encounter numerous options to select from: natural or synthetic bristle, long handle or short handle, and various shapes and sizes. To simplify matters while you are mastering the art of painting, opt for a novice brush set designed for watercolors or acrylics. These sets consist of a variety of brushes suitable for various painting techniques.

Types of Paintbrushes

Watercolor and acrylic paints can be used with both natural and synthetic bristle brushes. Natural bristle brushes typically create visible brush strokes, whereas synthetic bristles produce smoother lines. If you're uncertain about which type to select, experimenting with both can help you determine your preference. For those intending to work with both watercolors and acrylics, golden Taklon brushes are an excellent choice. This synthetic material is robust and compatible with various paint types. One of my preferred options is the Royal Langnickel Soft-Grip 5-Piece Starter Set, which offers high-quality brushes at a reasonable price and performs well with both watercolors and acrylics.

8. Paint Pad

Watercolor and acrylic painting have the flexibility to be applied on various surfaces, yet pads are notably well-suited for those new to the craft. Watercolor Paper Pad: Watercolor paper is sturdy enough to withstand water without buckling. Search for a watercolor paper pad with 140 lb. (300 GSM) weight and a "cold pressed" texture for easier painting. Canvas Pad: A canvas pad is a great choice for beginners working with acrylic paints. The tear-out sheets are pre-primed and ready for painting.

9. Plastic Paint Palette

A paint palette is essential for blending colors or thinning them with water when painting. Plastic palettes are suitable for watercolors and acrylics, with a recommended size of at least 7 inches (approximately 17.5 cm). Alternatively, a pad of disposable palette paper provides ample room for color mixing and simplifies the clean-up process.

10. Color Wheel

A color wheel is another helpful tool for new artists. It explains some basic facts about color and shows which colors to mix to create a new color.

Go Buy Art Supplies

Local art supply stores offer the convenience of being able to see the supplies in person before making a purchase, as well as having knowledgeable staff on hand to assist with any questions. Additionally, by shopping locally, you are supporting small businesses in your community. On the other hand, online art supply stores provide a wider selection of brands, customer reviews for guidance, and sometimes better prices. Both options have their own unique benefits, so choose the one that best fits your needs and preferences.
